A hard worked horse must be rested and his normal digestive power restored before concentrated food of any kind is given. However, because hay is a bulky food, it will not hurt a horse no matter how heated or fatigued he is.

How Do I Join The Volunteer Horse Patrol (VHP)?

In order to Join the VHP, you must meet the following General Requirements:

  1. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have a qualified horse available to them.
  2. A qualified horse should be experienced on trails, sound and in good condition, and calm enough to work safely with other horses and people.
  3. Prospective volunteers attend two evening training sessions (not on horseback) with park staff in March.
  4. Trainee and horse ride along with a patrolling member in April.
  5. Volunteer and horse successfully complete a qualification ride in May.
